Buller Week 2014

The queue was so long!
To be honest, this is a quick post of something that happened half a year ago which I never got around to writing - and need to write before my next trip >< (look forward to Seoul, South Korea and Singapore posts!).

About a week after getting back from New Zealand, I went with Nicole's family up to Mount Buller for a week. People must have realised that we had the best snow in ~17? years and the queue to get up the mountain was so long. Normally it takes an hour or so to get up the mountain, but I think it took nearly 2.5 hours!

We stayed at the Chalet and this trip is definitely a strong contender for my favourite ski trip. Just the freedom of no lessons and having so many runs open and being able to explore was so good.

The view across the valley

Nicole's family apparently have this one room that they always book - the room we were allocated was a different one however they were able to make friends with the staff and get us moved in the next day - madskillzbrah. Nicole Ling - shout out to your family! - your parents were amazing, stocked crazy amounts of food, and were so accommodating <3 for="" having="" me="" p="" thankyou="">But actually they brought so much food, I don't think we finished half of it. All these cinnamon and raisin bagels, eggs (love eggs forever), noodles, pizza, salad (lol), and a thousand other snacks that we didn't even open.

nice face ling - wearing my FOH Curtain Calls jumper!

Nicole at Apre - so messy you
The pasta that I'd been craving the whole week!
On the last day it was so wet and you could barely see a 3 metres in front - so we had enough time to drop by Tirol :)
Last day, just before the taxi came - look at that tan line >.> - also, new jacket!
So yup, that was the week really - skiing all day, dinner at Apres or in the room, stay up late watching Barbie movies. The weather was amazing for the first half of the trip, and then it started to get wet and foggy. Visibility dropped from sunny clear skies to having to follow the markers to get to different areas or just guessing and heading in a direction - and adjusting as the buildings appear out of the fog.

The week was really good for skiing though - it was the first time I've been up for more than a couple days without lessons. We had a lot of time to just explore the mountain and I think I managed to go on most runs I haven't been on before - or were never open because of poor coverage.

For the first time in forever, the runs under Shakey Knees were open - so we went down Cow Camp a couple of times. And we managed to do Chalet Creek - the run under the North Side Express - which was quite tiring and long, but such a fun run - tried to work on moguls a little there. It was also strange riding up the chairlift because it'd be raining down the bottom and snowing up the top.
I think we touched Burnt Hut once or twice, but mostly made a loop of Chalet Creek and Dam Run depending on the time limit.

We also had a lot of fun discovering all the interconnecting paths - so we took Access Trail from Bonza down to Boggy Creek. I've never really spent much time in that area but we did runs around Boggy Creek and the Grimus Chair quite a fair bit.

Of course we hit up the black runs off Skyline - attempting (maybe) Funnel Run and (definitely) Wood Run (it's hard to know which ones because we crossed around quite a fair bit); and Standard wasn't too busy and had a nice run. I accidently got us stuck around Lydia's chairlift twice so we had to catch the rope tow (so difficult - I'm sorry Nicole:/ )

We didn't touch Federation or South Side but we went down a couple of the blacks around the Wombat chairlift which was fun - Wombat or Little Buller Spur had the Uni Championships going on some days so that area was blocked off towards the end, but before that they had such a good run and were a bit icy down the bottom - good for carving! During the bad visibility days, these areas got really busy since they're in a valley and are mostly out of the fog.

And of course, we went down Summit and dropped through the Blues around Howqua. Howqua itself got crazily steep and icy at the bottom - I fell there :( full tumble a couple of metres down...

Wow that block of text - but tldr - I went on a lot of new runs :3

faithfully,
Mai
